The Maze Runner section 2
1) Ben the psychotic kid tries to kill Thomas and then is banished for doing so, then Thomas tries out different jobs in the Glade, only to be interested in one job, a runner. Then, one night when Minho and Alby go missing in the Maze, Thomas goes after them, which is against the law in the Glade, to help Alby who seemed to be hurt.
2) I really like the way Thomas has grown in the past few chapter; he helps others even if it is considered to be wrong in their society.
3) I think Thomas is pretty clueless at the beginning of this novel because he doesn't know anything about himself or how he got to the Glade, like any other "Greenie". However, he feels as if he has been to the Glade before, so his cluelessness fades away after the first week. Many people who have been through the Changing (had the serum when a Griever stung them) recognize Thomas, which makes him the bad guy in all of this. A lot of the boys blame him for all of the crazy stuff occurring in the Glade since it all started after he arrived. Thomas is also very courageous, like when he saved Alby, even though it would have been easier for him to leave Alby and save himself. "He couldn't leave a friend to die. Even someone as cranky as Alby," (Bradbury 120).
4) If I were Thomas, I would not have been able to help Alby like Thomas did, because I would be too scared. Thomas thought quickly and efficiently when he was thinking of a plan to save him and his friend, and I think I would've just freaked out until someone calmed me down.

In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, Napoleon gave me the impression that he is extremely determined once he knows what he wants. Napoleon believes that all animals are being used against their will until they can physically no longer work. This motivates napoleon to form a mass rebellion against the entire human race until animals have taken over. Just as Napoleon describes "We will rise to power! There is no stopping us now!" In the second section of Animal Farm Napoleon and two other pigs declare themselves as the official leaders of the revolt. These pigs order the other farm animals with tasks that will essentially fulfill their wanting. For example, the pigs have the horses do tasks that involve hauling heavy amounts. All duties will ultimately create the society remodeled to what they want. I was very surprised at how Napoleon is the head master mind of this, yet does not work himself physically. All Napoleon does is give orders to the other farm animals and make sure they do the work well. If I was in Napoleons shoes i would do physical work myself. He recognizes his intelligence and should apply it to working to help what he wants. this way he would know everything is being done exactly as he wants it to be done.

When Shay finally gave up on trying to convince Tally to go to see the city Smoke with her, she decided to go by herself. Tally kept her promise never to tell anyone where she was going until the Special Circumstance found out about their secrets and told Tally that they would only make her pretty if she led them to Shay. I didn't like how Tally actually listened to Dr.Cable from the Special Circumstance because she kept a promise to Shay and now she's going behind her back just so she could become pretty. In the beginning of the book, Tally was just like all the other people in the society; she wanted to be pretty and live a fun life. She was confused when Shay didn't want to turn pretty and realized that if she thought so deeply into it, then there must actually be someplace different outside the society and everything Shay was saying was true. However, with Tallys past still with her, she couldn't forget the promises she made with her best friend Peris. She hasn't changed her opinion on wanted to turn pretty or not since the beginning of the book but the Special Circumstance has lured her into their plan because they know how she will do anything in order to turn pretty. "This'll all be over in no time. Just have a nice chat with Special Circumstances, tell them everything, and you'll be headed where you really want to be" (Westerfeld 119). Even Tally's mom motivates her to betray her friend and do what society thinks is right. If I was Tally, I would never have betrayed Shay just to become pretty. I would have gone to the city Smoke with her to escape their society.

‘The Program’ by Suzanne Young
1) The section begins with Sloane’s boyfriend, James, having trouble coping with the death of his best friend, Miller, who killed himself using QuikDeath. James becomes depressed and his parents call to have him put in the Program. When he comes out, he doesn't remember Sloane causing depression and a suicide attempt by Sloane. Sloane’s parents have her put into the Program and the section ends with Sloane taking a tour of the Program building.
2) What surprised me most in this section was that James was put into the Program first instead of Sloane because Sloane seems much more fragile and this proves she was a stronger character than I thought she was.
3) In the beginning of the book, Sloane seems really dependent. She is dependent of her friend, Miller, to be funny and happy and always keep her excited and willing to live. She is dependent on her parents to not send her into the Program. Most of all, she is dependent on her boyfriend, James, to keep her going and living everyday. This is connected to what motivates her in that her boyfriend is what keeps her living daily. This dependence on James is evident when Suzanne Young writes, “[to James] ‘Don’t leave me,’ I sob. ‘Please don’t leave me here alone,’” (Young 90). Sloane is really dependent on her family and friends to keep her alive and it will be interesting to see how she acts without her support system during the six weeks she stays in the Program.
4) If I were Sloane and in the Program, I would do my best to make friends as the nurse suggests. I wouldn’t make friends to replace the old ones, but Sloane is a really dependent character in the beginning of the book and having friends in the Program would probably give her someone to lean on because right now she’s facing the Program alone.

1) Zane and Tally go looking at the Valentino Mansion for the package that Croy hid for her. Croy told her that it is very important and that she needs to see it. When Zane and Tally get to the package, there were two pills and a letter written by her when she was an ugly to her future self. The letter talked about her plan of becoming a pretty only to find a cure to the operation. Zane and Tally both take a pill each to see what would happen and come up with a plan to get the new smokies attention.
2) I was surprised when Tally took the pill because she now has everything she ever wanted and that pill could have ruined it all for her.
3) In the beginning of the book, Tally put all her energy into being bubbly and trying to become a Crim. When she was an ugly, she risked a lot to be where she is now. "All those weeks that Tally had been lost in the wild, all she'd ever wanted was to be back here with Peris, pretty in New Pretty Town," (Westerfeld 13). She worked hard for this and all of Tally’s friends are Crim’s and now it’s her time to shine to try and be one. She goes to a party at the Valentino Mansion to impress the former Crims. When she chases after the Special Circumstances and jumps off the side of the building, it showed the Crims how bubbly and risk taking she is. The next morning, Tally gets a ping telling her that she is now a Crim and Tally is the happiest person in New Pretty Town.
4) If I were put in Tally’s shoes, I would have done exactly what she did. It was a good decision to go see what Croy left for her and she made the right decision by trusting herself and taking the pill because even if she didn’t remember, the old Tally told her that the only reason why she ever went through with the operation is so that they can test the cure on her. So if Tally didn’t take the pill, then she would be betraying herself, Croy, Croy’s mother, and David.

Equality 7-2521, although not allowed to make contact or even speak to woman, began to look and eventually talk to women named Liberty 5-3000. They think all of the fear that is within the society, and about the people who have died from saying the Unspeakable Word; they want to know what the Unspeakable Word is. When the main character talked to Liberty 5-3000, I wasn’t surprised, since he had been looking at them for many days and this makes me like the character because he isn’t happy with all the restrictions that are put upon the people in the society, but he breaks some small rules it occasionally, to be happy. My character in the beginning of the book is a quiet man part of the Equality 7-2521, which breaks the rules without the government knowing. He breaks these rules for his own happiness, since he isn’t happy in his society; he breaks some rules to do things that will make them happier. “We are singing because we are happy,” (Rand 45) was what the Equality 7-2521 said after they talked to the women in Liberty 5-3000. They did this forbidden thing because they wanted to be happy. If I were Equality 7-2521, I wouldn’t have talked to the women from Liberty 5-3000 because it is against the law, and I wouldn’t want to disobey the government. Also I wouldn’t break the law because Equality 7-2521 have broken the law many times, and if the government finds out, they will be in a lot of trouble.

In the book so far Darrow has found out what the Sons of Ares wanted of him and he has done it: he has become a Gold, supposedly impossible he went from being the lowest of society to being one of the elite. He is being sent to an academy to train with other Golds after exceling in the test to get in, he only missed one question, but he will have to fight against other Golds to become one of the Peerless Scared, the highest of the Golds who rule over the society. Darrow is starting to act more and more like a Gold especially in realizing his power over people, I still like Darrow but hope he will still stay true to himself. My first impression of Darrow was he thought he was happy and was quite obediant in society, he was motivated by the love of his family and Eo, he still is, but now has an even higher purpose. He was more motivated by fear of starvation and dying young, leaving Eo a widow but is quickly losing all his former fears for new. stonger fears. "Soon we will have made man into god. Red into Gold. Even your wife would not recognize you. That is all I've ever feared,"(Brown 96). Darrow isn't scared of starvation or leaving Eo as a widow anymore, he fears that he will no longer be himself in this new skin and that if Eo were to see him she would be scared, terrefied even. If I were Darrow I don't know if I would have been able to undergo all that pain of transformng into a Gold but if I was going to make a loved ones dream come true, how could I say no?

Shay, Tally’s new best friend, takes Tally on many adventures and when it comes close to the day of the surgery to become a pretty, Shay decides to leave to the Smoke where people stay ugly for the rest of their life. Tally stays back and on the day of her surgery she is told that she can’t be made pretty until she helps the Special Circumstances find Shay and the Smoke. Tally has a hard time deciding but ends up agreeing to help them find her. When Shay told Tally about leaving to Smoke, Tally wasn’t encouraging and asked her to stay. She was giving her a lot of reasons to stay and not leave and I didn’t like that because if Tally was a really good friend she would be letting her make her own decisions by not influencing them. My first impression of Tally was shy and mainstream because she wishes for what everyone in that society wants, to become a pretty. Shay however comes and slowly tries to bring her different views on the world to her attention. In this quote they are talking about what people in Smoke are like, they say, “‘And everyone’s ugly.’ ‘Which’s means no one’s ugly.’ Tally managed to laugh. ‘Which means no one’s pretty, you mean.’” Tally is always looking forward to becoming pretty and isn’t focusing on what really matters like their society, friendship, and betrayal. If I was Tally and I had to choose to either become pretty or betray Shay by giving away all information about the Smoke, then I would choose to stay ugly. It isn’t something I would be worried about because if I was being judged in Uglyville, then I could escape to the Smoke with the directions Shay gave me to go to a place where your appearance is not your main focus in life.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver
When Lena goes to Hana’s house to celebrate the Fourth of July like they do every year, Lena discovers that her friend was listening to forbidden music; the only music that is legal is from the Library of Authorized Music and Movies but Hana found her music on an unauthorized website and she tries to convince Lena to go with her to a party after curfew. Lena doesn’t want to go to the party so she wants to prove Hana wrong so she goes to the party and finds Alex there. I was surprised when Lena snuck out to go the party because she seemed so determined not to go when she was at Hana’s house. My first impression of Lena is that she is someone who strictly follows the rules and that she doesn’t like to get in trouble. I think living with her aunt has made Lena who she is because when she lived with her mom who was uncured, they danced and sang, something that wasn’t allowed in their society. But knowing that she enjoyed these things with her mom, Lena is ashamed of her mother. Lena says, “I understood that all the happiest moments of my childhood were a lie. They were wrong and unsafe and illegal,” (Oliver 115). Lena doesn’t like that her mother broke the rules and she wants to follow the rules. This section reminds me of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury because everything that the citizens in this society can only read, watch, and listen to things on Library of Authorized Music and Movies, the List of Authorized Entertainment, and the Library of Approved Books. This was similar to Fahrenheit 451 because the government limits what they watch on TV, what they listen to on Seashells, and what they read in newspapers.
As she heads north to Canada, Radley realizes how much she misses the things she took for granted and one of those things was having someone to talk to. When she comes across a sick girl named Celia and her dog Jerry Lee, she helps the girl get better and finally has someone to talk to as they travel together. I was surprised when Radley used her own money that she was saving up without hesitation to buy food for Celia when she was sick and I liked her more as a character. My first impression of Radley is that she was a little too spoiled until she was on her own and fighting for survival. She's become a little smarter and more careful to not get caught and sent to jail. Radley still has the same motivations as before. She said "I only want to be dry and safe, I only want something hot to eat. I only want to find my parents and get my old life back," (Hesse 67). I could connect to a time in the book when Radley was getting rice for Celia at a cafe and asked how much she owed but the owner took one look at her and waved her away thinking she was the sick one. It was like a time when I was at a field trip and I was getting some iced tea and was short a few cents but the cashier waved it off saying it was fine which surprised me both at the field trip and in the book as I realized how nice some people could be.
ReplyDeleteAfter Miller committed suicide with ‘QuikDeath’, Sloane notices that James isn’t his usual self, and he is close to being flagged and taken. Sloane tries to protect him, but fails, and not long after, Sloane ends up in the program; James doesn’t remember her at all, as they have wiped his memory. When James was taken into The Program, Sloane found it hard to hide her feelings, and her parents wanted to send her to The Program. Upset, Sloane tried to die the same way her brother did; by jumping and drowning. I was surprised because Sloane’s character is cautious, and would never want to be flagged. By doing this, she would easily be sent to The Program. Her character is rebellious and angry at this point in the book, and I think it adds to the book’s suspense. At the beginning of the book, Sloane tried hard to not be flagged. When james was taken, she completely lost it, and let grief take over. This led to her being taken to The Program. “‘We were just so worried, Sloane. Since James came back, you haven’t been the same. And after Brady, we couldn’t take the chance…’” (Young 119). Sloane’s parents easily realized that she was depressed, and thought that The Program would fix her. If I was Sloane, I don’t think that I would be able to do the things she did. Before she left, she cut open her wrist with scissors. I wouldn’t be able to deal with the pain. While I would fight the ‘handlers’ that take people to The Program, I don’t think that i would be able to be as brave as Sloane was.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
1) In this section of the book, Katniss is preparing for the Hunger Games in the Capitol. When she first arrives, she is quickly presented to the nation of Panem in a ceremony introducing the tributes of the 74th Hunger Games. After leaving a great first impression as "the girl on fire" due to her stylists, she then has a chance to present her skills in the Training Center. Katniss earns a score of eleven out of twelve, due to her outstanding abilities as an archer.
2) Katniss is still is a likeable character, considering she is determined to win the Hunger Games to return to her family, and she is constantly thinking of them. For example, after she shot an arrow at the Gamemakers for not paying attention to her presentation, she worried about her family's safety knowing that the Capitol could give harsh punishments for slight accidents.
3) At the beginning of the book, Katniss is determined to return home from the Hunger Games after volunteering for Prim, and did her best to present herself to the Capitol in a way that she would gain sponsors to help her survive during the games. Again, she is motivated by her responsibility of taking care of her mother and Prim, so she does everything she can to ensure she will return home to them. Katniss can be very stubborn, but she still does everything her preparation team tells her to do in order to survive and return home. "I don't find you so. The prep team adores you. You even won over the Gamemakers. And as for the citizens of the Capitol, well, they can't stop talking about you. No one can help but admire your spirit." (Collins 121). As you can see, Katniss is setting up a reputation for herself that will help her to survive in the Hunger Games, and hopefully will allow her to return home in the future.
4) If I were Katniss, I would also try my best to win the Hunger Games; I would want to see my family and friends back home. If I were to participate in the games, what would be the point of giving up to never see my family again?

Katniss and Peeta are continuing on their Victory Tour but unintentionally spark rebellion so to try to please President Snow, Katniss gets engaged to Peeta. Katniss sees a rebellion on TV and knows that President Snow will try to come after her, so she debates whether or not to try to run away until she sees Gale, her best friend, being whipped. Katniss tried to arrange to run away with her family to protect them and this is a reason why I like this character. In the beginning Katniss is a protector. She is trying to protect herself, her family, and her friends. She cares mostly about her friends. This shows when she is talking about Rue and how she thinks that she reminds her of Prim, her sister. “Everything beautiful brings her to mind. I see her in the yellow flowers that grow in the Meadow by my house. I see her in the mockingjays in the trees. But most of all I see her in my sister Prim,” (Collins 16%). I would do the same thing in her situation. I would try to protect what is dear to me by any means possible.

Stephen is knocked out and meets Sam, Marcus, Jackson, and Will, they take Stephen and his Dad back to their settlement Settler’s Landing so that Violet a previous army nurse can tend to Stephens father. Stephen sees a lot of things at Settler’s Landing that he had never seen before such as school, houses, and an Asian girl, the girls name is Jennie and Stephen befriends her despite Jennie is hated ethnicity. I like Stephen because he was friendly towards Jennie after she started a fight and ran away from the townspeople. In the beginning of my story Stephen is a careful, determined, and smart teenager. Stephan is motivated to get his Dad healthy and often thinks of his grandfather’s sayings to help him make decisions. When questioned with what his name was from Sam and Marcus who appeared harmless, Stephen wouldn’t tell them because of something his Grandfather told him. “Never tell anyone anything they don’t need to know”. Stephen actually got to know Marcus and Sam more and they took him to a place for his Dad to get healthy while barely knowing Stephen. The sayings help keep Stephen safe as he tries to make his Dad feel well again. If I were Stephen I would have told Sam and Marcus my name so they would see I am an honest person and they would trust me. If Stephen didn’t tell Marcus and Sam his name then maybe they wouldn’t trust him and help his Dad.

1.) Tris is getting used to being a Dauntless, but before she used to get bullied. She starts to feel more accepted and comfortable with it.
2.) She took Al’s spot when he was going to get knives thrown at him as punishment, this made me like her because she is brave and sticks up for her friends.
3.)My first impression of my character was that she was nervous and didn’t really have a plan of what she was doing with her life. She wasn’t sure what faction she was going to pick yet and was unsure about her actions especially after being told she was Divergent. “My blood drips onto the carpet between the two bowls. Then, with a gasp I can’t contain, I shift my hand forward, and my blood sizzles on the coals. I am selfish. I am brave,” (Roth 47). She was trying to pick between Abnegation and Dauntless in the end picking Dauntless. She is trying to get used to her new life and what she can make of it.
4.) I would not have talked back to the leader, Eric like Tris did. I do not have the amount of courage to do that without thinking I would get in huge trouble.

Mockingjay By Suzanne Collins
The rebels are trying to film Katniss as she agreed to be their Mockingjay and fight against the Capitol. The first try wasn't good enough so the plan was for Katniss to go to District 8 and help the rebels fight the Capitol while recording her do it. I’m really surprised that Katniss obeyed orders and went on top of the warehouse, risking her life, to help the rebels shoot down the capital bombers. My first impression at the beginning of the story, Katniss is like baby. She's normally like herself, hunting and shooting arrows with her bow, and the next minute realizes the real world that she lives in and the bad things in it and starts screaming and yelling. One thing that makes her start screaming is Peeta not being with her and Gale not supporting her. "That I don't believe for a second that he didn't see Peeta's propo. That I feel completely betrayed they didn't tell me about it,"(Collins 117). Another thing that makes her start screaming and yelling is thinking about the people the Capitol bombed and how unfair they are. "I want to tell people that if you think for one second the Capitol will treat us fairly if there's a cease fire, you're deluding yourself. Because you know who they are and what they do,"(Collins 105).If I were to put myself in Katniss's shoes, I would've also disobeyed orders and would've helped the rebels shoot down the Capitol bombers. Even though it would risk my life, I would've done the same thing that Katniss did.

In this section of Uglies Tally’s friend Shay talks about how her old friends went to live in the Smoke with a man named Robert, Shay tries to convince Tally to go live there with her, Tally refuses but promises Shay that she won’t tell anyone where she went. When Tally goes for her operation to become pretty she’s given an ultimatum from special circumstances, she can either find Shay and her friends or stay ugly forever. I still don’t fully like Tally because almost all the decisions she makes are based upon her becoming pretty, she chose not to go with Shay because she wanted to spend the rest of her life as an ugly. My first impression of Tally is that she is naïve; she is so focused on becoming and pretty and being with Peris again that she doesn’t see anything wrong with society. Like everyone else Tally has her blinders on and thinks that it’s okay to teach people that they’re ugly but with an operation they can become pretty. Tally is motivated by the fact that she will become pretty soon and doesn’t want to jeopardize that. When special circumstances asks Tally to help them find Shay she decides to keep Shay’s secret which would cause her to remain ugly, but when she gets a visit from her pretty friend Peris he reminds her of a promise that she made to him. “You promised you wouldn’t do anything stupid Tally. That you’d be with me soon. That we’d be pretty together,”(Westerfeld 121). After Tally realizes she would be breaking the promise she made to Peris before she even met Shay she decides to help special circumstances find her and the others. If I were Tally I would go find Shay to make sure that she was as happy living in the Smoke as she thought she’d be, but I wouldn’t help special circumstances find her unless she wanted to them to.

1) In this section, Cassia’s grandfather turns 80, which is the age you die in this society and she has a hard time losing him. He gives her two poems that were supposed to be destroyed and are illegal to have.
2) Cassia wants to get rid of the poems her grandfather gave her, but I think this is a bad decision because these poems can’t be found anywhere else in society, and they are probably important if her great grandmother wanted these poems to be kept around.
3) In the beginning of the book, Cassia did exactly what she was supposed to do in society. Her Grandfather has always told her to use her own words and that she is a strong person. He recently gave her poems and it is against society rules to have possession of them, but Cassia hid them from the officials which is something she would’ve never done. Her motivation throughout the story is her grandfather and you can see this on page 119 when Cassia says, “I don’t think I’ll take it, not even tonight. Grandfather thinks I’m strong enough to go without it.” Here, her grandfather is motivating her not to take the green pill.
4) One connection I have to Cassia is how she keeps most of her thoughts to herself. If I was in her shoes, I definitely wouldn’t have told anyone about the poems or even how Ky was on her microcard.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner
As Thomas explores the Glade’s graveyard, he almost gets killed by Ben, who’s later on banished in the maze. Thomas also meets a runner, Minho. Newt tells Thomas to try out different jobs to find out his fit in the Glade but Thomas is only attentive in one job, which is to be a runner. When Alby and Minho got stuck in the maze, Thomas goes in there to help them. Thomas is still confused and unaware about a lot of things in his new life. I was surprised at the fact that Thomas went in the maze after knowing all the dangers of it just to help his friends, who he just met. I like this about Thomas because it shows he’s a brave and kind person. In the beginning, Thomas was really confused and oblivious because he just arrived in the Glade, with his memory washed out. But as he got familiar with the place, he got more fearless around the place. The urge of being a runner motivates him to be courageous and helpful, like how he went in the maze to help Minho and Alby. “He squeezed past the connecting rods at the last second and stepped into the Maze” (Dasher 112). If I were Thomas I wouldn't have gone into the maze because I would not have the courage to go inside of a completely strange place, filled with monsters.

1. Katniss and Peeta, along with the other tributes are at the Capitol and preparing for the games. They all get beautified constantly, and begin training to show their skills but at the end, in an interview, Peeta reveals that he is in love with Katniss.
2. I still like Katniss and one thing she did was shoot an arrow at the people judging her talent because they were disregarding her and then she said “Thank you for your consideration” (Collins 118) which I thought was clever and funny.
3. My first impression of Katniss is that she hides away her feelings and is constantly regressed and not willing to open herself up to the world. In this section, Katniss is motivated by her anger, like when she shot an arrow at the judges of her skills because they would not pay attention to her. I think she is also still motivated by her family because after she shoots the arrow she says “What about my family? I say. Will they punish them” (Collins 123). Katniss is motivated to do the right thing and not continue anger the people in charge of her life just for her family.
4. If I were Katniss, I would not have shot the arrow at them because they decide her score and it is important for her to get a good score so she can get sponsors that will fund her during the games and send gifts to help her survive. A similar thing happened to Harry Potter who was disrespectful to an instructor and was then punished and faced the consequences of his action.
1. Day and June are accepted into the Patriot ranks. Their mission is for Day to assassinate the Elector and June to rejoin the Republic, then lure the Elector to the ambush. While June is working her way to the Elector, Day is taken to the central command of the Patriots. While he is there he makes enemies with a jealous runner. Also he sees a world map for the first time and realizes that the Republic isn't the world superpower, but a groveling country seeking aid in war.
ReplyDelete2. "If anything goes wrong, if you change your mind, if you need help, you send a signal you hear me?" (Lu 271). I think Day is pretty smart and careful. Even when he is surrounded by friends, he knows that something bad can always happen. Thus, he makes a plan that can allow him to protect his loved ones. I like this character for his dedication and love for his family/friends.
3.In the beginning, Day is very stubborn. He refuses to acknowledge risks that come with his actions such as him joining the Patriots or living a life of crime. "The Patriots won't help us without some sort of payment [June], Yeah, I know. [Day]" (Lu 29). Day is talking to join on the way to join the Patriots. She brings up that they don't have much money and it took 200,000 dollars to get the Patriots to help last time. Day ignores it and continues believing that he can make it into the Patriots and see Tess. Also he has a gunshot wound that is slowly killing him, but he persists on trying to get to Tess.
4. Day allowed June to be captured by the Republic and allowed the person who captured her to be her brother's murderer. If I were him, I wouldn't allow that to happen. I would have disobeyed orders and helped her escape. Her brother's murderer is a hardcore loyalist and had a crush on June. The Hunger Games
The opening ceremonies are starting for the hunger games. Katniss and Peeta are pretending to be a team and the crowd goes wild because of this. Katniss thought that Peeta was trying to act nice to make it harder to kill him so then Katniss did the same thing by kissing him on the cheek. I think this was a good idea because Katniss needs to make sure she survives even if she has to trick her friend. Katniss is very brave, confident, and intelligent. She knows that she needs a sponsor to get food and good weapons so she makes the crowd love her. Also, she blows kisses at the crowd because she’s knows that she can win if she gets a sponsor. When she sees Peeta trying to be nice she thinks that he’s tricking her so she tries to trick him too. “Don’t be so stupid. Peeta is planning how to kill you, I remind myself. He is luring you in to make you easy prey. The more likely he is, the more deadly he is. But because two can play at this game, I stand on tiptoe and kiss his cheek.” If I was Katniss I would have tried to trick Peeta if I thought he was trying to trick me. Even though he is my friend I would rather protect myself than have him trick me.

The Maze Runner #2
1) A Kid named Ben got stung by a griever and tried to kill Thomas but was not successful. After that Thomas was spending a day with each keeper while Alby and Minho went out in the maze to see a dead griever. They did not come back until the doors were closing and they weren't going to make it through so Thomas went into the maze to help.
2) After Thomas had went into the maze when the doors were closing he was left with Alby who had been stung by a griever and who was unconscious. Minho got scared and ran into the maze to try to escape the grievers. Thomas didn't want to leave Alby to die so he tied vines around him and and pushed him up and tied more vines at that height until they were 30 feet high. This was amazing to me because he didn't like Alby that much and Thomas was putting his life at risk while trying to save Alby.
3) Thomas was very curious so far in the book. He was always asking questions to learn more about the Glade. “Thomas asked, thinking the more he could get Newt to talk, the more he’d learn (Dashner 99).” All Thomas wanted to do was learn about the place so he could help get out of it.
4) If I had been Thomas I wouldn't have had went into the maze to help Alby and Minho when the doors were closing. I would have been scared of the grievers because they were dangerous. The Gladers also said that no one had ever survived a night in the maze so it would have seemed like suicide to them if I had gone into the maze at night.

Writing 2 War of the Worlds
1. The large tree legged robots came out of the cylinders and are completely destroying everything in sight. The main character fled with his wife and maid to a different town. So far four Martians have landed on earth and sixteen are still to come.
2. The narrator has been in awe of the Martians and doesn’t tend to be too afraid. When the army was attempting to shoot it down he was watching and cheering during the whole thing. I cant say whether I like him or not because I simply don know enough about him.
3. So far he has been seemingly brave and is more fascinated then scared. Now he is being motivated by curiosity. He is staying nearer the action to know what’s going on. He said “Hit shouted I with something between a scream and a cheer.” He enjoys watching the battle unfold and is curious for the outcome.
4. If I were in his shoes I would also be curious on to how everything will end, what they look like, and so on but I wouldn’t stand in the middle of the action. Id wait for it to be over then figure out what happened.

1. Tris has started the physical training, and she is much more weak than the others. However, when all the initiates go to have the annual paintball fight, Tris proved to Four that she was brave by climbing the ferris wheel, and smart enough to come up with a plan to get the flag.
2. I was surprised Tris climbed up the ferris wheel, and was even able to despite her aching body from losing fights the previous days. This showed how strong she truly is regardless of what anyone else says. I still like Tris because she hasn’t given up on becoming Dauntless.
3. Tris has no where near as much muscle as everyone else, making her seem very weak. Everyone always teases her from coming from Abnegation and being a “stiff,” which motivated her to prove her bravery. “Whatever Four’s strategy is, it’s based on the idea that I am weaker than the other initiates. And it gives me a bitter taste in my mouth. I have to prove him wrong--I have to,” (Roth 134). Tris is determined to prove everyone wrong, and by the outcome of the paintball fight, she seems to be doing just that.
4. If I were Tris, I would have done something similar to her coming up with a plan or climbing the ferris wheel to prove her bravery. If Tris wants to remain in Dauntless, she needs to stand out and do something so she makes the cut, which is what I also would’ve want.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
In this section, Harry, Hermione, and the Weasley Family go to the Quidditch World cup game that everyone in the wizarding world has been looking forward to. However, Harry discovers that the opposing teams star player cored purposely for ireland!
While all of the excitement was going on, Fred and George, the Weasley twins were making bets with everyone and selling them trick items, personally I believe this was wrong of them.
I believe that throughout the series the Weasley twins have always caused trouble in the book with their pranks. I think that they do not mean to cause as much harm as they do but they simply wish to have a bit of fun and also are very proud of the work they do accomplish with these pranks. “‘We spent six months developing those!’ Fred shouted at his mother as she threw the toffees away.” (Rowling 68). Fred was obviously crushed that his mother was throwing away the trick candies his mother had discarded because of all the work he put into them. I believe this shows that they just wanted to have fun and wanted to show off their work proudly.
Whenever i work hard on a painting i make its always the worst whenever someone moves it when its still wet and the watercolors mix together, so i can connect with Fred in his moment of distress because when you work hard on something you don’t want it to be destroyed.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner (Section 2)
1.Another Glader, Ben went crazy trying to kill Thomas and was then banished from the glade. Also Minho and Alby go out in the maze to search for a dead griever but return when the walls are closing, and Thomas slips between the walls to help.
2.I was surprised that Thomas went out into the maze to help Minho because Thomas dreads the grievers that will be coming out.
3.Since this is Thomas’ first week at the Glade he is always asking questions and very curios. The reason my character asked all these questions is he feels like he has been to the glade before, so he want to find if his suspicions were true. However not many people answer his questions like, “Chuck and everyone else around the Glade never wanted to give him answers to anything. And here was Zart, who seemed perfectly willing,” (Dashner 113). So Chuck did get some answers but he still has a lot of questions.
4.I can connect with Thomas on going into the glade but not in an actual event, more on his mind set. Thomas saw Minho carrying Alby back and was concerned for them. He then put his life on the line by stepping out into the maze as night fell. I can relate to this because if someone I knew was in trouble in the moment I would go help even if my life was on the line.

Blog #2~ Article 5 by Kristen Simmons
1) Sean notifies Ember of the escape plan from the rehabilitation center where Ember was brought to days prior, but they are caught in the act when Randolph finds them and reports it Ms. Brock who severely punishes both of them. Chase, Ember’s ex and solider in the MM, comes on official business to bring her to a “trial”, but he escapes with her and they are now on the run to a safe house for refugees in South Carolina.
2) I like that Chase risked his life by going to the rehabilitation center to sneak Ember out because this shows that Chase still cares and has feelings for Ember and that he will keep her safe in times of trouble.
3) In the beginning of the novel, Ember was convinced she would be able to run away by herself without help because that was the least risky way. Then, Ember trusted Sean to devise a plan that would safely get her off the rehabilitation center’s grounds. This plan however, failed because Randolph was suspicious of Sean and so he caught them in the act of helping Ember escape. Finally, Chase is able to get Ember out of the rehabilitation center. Instead of always having to rely on herself Ember is starting to trust other people as seen here when Chase asks, “There’s no time to explain, trust me. We’ve got to move out,” (Simmons 108).
4) At the end of this section, the MM cruiser turns on its sirens and starts following Ember and Chase’s pick-up truck because they are driving after sundown. I this situation I would pull over and try to play it cool rather than trying to escape and run the risk of getting in even more trouble.

Equality 7-2521 began to look and talk to women from Liberty 5-3000. They wonder what the Unspeakable Word is. When the main character talked to Liberty 5-3000, I was surprised even though he had been looking at them for a while I didn't think that he would actually think it was a good idea to go up and talk to her. My character in the beginning of the book is a man part of the Equality 7-2521. He breaks rules for his own happiness because he is always unhappy in his society. he breaks some rules to do things that will make them happier. "You are beautiful,
liberty 5-3000,” (Rand 42) this is what the Equality 7-2521 when they talked to the women in Liberty 5-3000. They did this to be happy. If I were Equality 7-2521, I would have talked to the women from Liberty 5-3000 because if it made me happy to do so and I wasn't likely to get caught then why not be happy if only for a moment.

ReplyDeleteEnder’s Game
Section Two
Ender continues his training as Graff is behind the scenes pulling every string he can to prepare Ender for what is next. He is constantly fighting with his peers and winning, and everytime he makes friends he gets ripped away from them. Ender has a mind game which presents him with challenges that are tailored to himself. In these he sees his brother Peter, who he constantly thinks he’s turning into as he gets more and more violent. Because of this, he get very upset and doesn’t progress in the game. I like this because although Graff and the IF are doing the best they can to break him, at his core he is still a nice kid who can’t stand to be evil. In the beginning of the book, Ender is a nice kid who uses simple logic and his intelligence to solve his problems. He is concerned with being someone evil like his brother, and this feeling overrides any other influence in his behavior. “It was Peter, with blood dripping down his chin and a snake's tail protruding from a corner of his mouth. Ender shouted and thrust his desk from him.” When Endeer looks in the mirror and expects his own reflection, he sees Peter. Peter is truly Ender’s foil. He is everything Ender doesn't want to be, and Ender’s inner sense of self-peril is derived from the fact he feels more and more like Peter everyday. If I was Ender, I would definitely try my best to look inside myself, see who I want to be, and try to be that. Ender gets influenced too much by his peers.

The Kill Order
The camp that Mark and Trina were staying at was attacked and the people were shot with darts containing an unknown virus. The virus then began sweeping through the population and more people were becoming infected and dying. Mark is becoming more and more hardened and willing to whatever it takes for his survival. Mark, Trina, Alec and Lana were forced to leave most of their friends behind as to not risk infection. I like Mark because he reminds me a lot of myself and has similar traits to me. At the beginning of the book, Mark is motivated to do what he does out of friendship and survival. Mark said, “…we’ll do everything we can not to catch whatever it was that killed Darnell and the others.”(Dashner 63) Mark and his friends are trying to stay together while also looking out for their own lives. Even in the apocalyptic Earth, Mark is motivated by his friends. If I was a character in this book, once the virus began spreading in the camp, I would have left. I would have gone away by myself to stay away from the disease and preserve my own life.

Chapters 9-16
1. In these chapters the kids set up a government system. Everyone has a job: Caine is the leader, Drake is the sheriff, Sam is the fireman, and Mary is in charge of the little kids.
2. Sam defended Bette when Orc tried to keep beating her for using her power, this caused me to think he is protective and makes me like this character.
3. My first impression of Sam is that he is a natural leader, brave, and protective. In the beginning of the book Sam runs into a burning building to save a kid, everyone talks to him like he is the leader, and he tries to help everyone. Sam was motivated by wanting to help the kids and Astrid. In the book it says, "'So I wasn't going to let him hit her again,' Sam said as calmly as he could," (Grant 175). He was a natural leader, brave, and protective in this quote when he was standing up for Bette.
4. If I was in Sam's shoes when Orc and his police men were beating up Bette, I would probably not be brave enough to protect her. I would be afraid that they would seriously injure me and I would not take that risk in real life.

The Scorch Trials
In the novel The Scorch Trial, by James Dashner, Thomas and the gladers have begun phase two. Having to complete phase two in two weeks, the gladers face numerous threats such as cranks, lack of food and water, the scorching hot journey, and being hunted down by group B.
When Winston got attacked by WICKED's high tech technology he was extremely courageous going to help his friend when he didn't even know how dangerous the weapon was. In this section Thomas showed that he can be courageous but also responsible and realistic, he knows when is. Good time to act on instinct and when to consider the consequences of what your actions can lead to without thinking.
In the beginning, Thomas is very brave and he wants to make it through phase two alive without losing anymore of his friends. Thomas wants to protect his friends but there are so many dangerous obstacles they are going to have to face so Thomas does whatever he can to make sure the gladers and himself are safe even if that means putting himself self in danger. "Just...let me do this. Something tells me we need to be careful."
If I was a fellow glader I would feel protected and safe even though there are so many terrible things that can happen, because all the gladers look after each other and they are like a family they don't want to lose anyone or leave any one behind.

Tris and Tobias along with Caleb and Susan while on the run hop aboard a train that takes them to a place where Tobias meets his mother, a woman everyone had previously thought to be dead. They soon after leave and find themselves at a place of Candor, honesty, where they are forced to go under a truth serum that makes them reveal everything, faltering Tobias and Tris' relationship. This section ends with other an attack from Dauntless traitors who have sided with the Eurodite in an attempt to take over the whole population. After everything that happened with the truth serum it made Tris and Tobias very on edge and ended up in a fight. I do like Tobias as a character and i also like Tris but the way they handled the fight i did not like. In the end they both just walked away which surprised me as they are both very stubborn and don't give up easily. They both know they need each other and have never given up that way before. My first impression of the new Tris is a iffy one. Although she is more outgoing and braver than before, she is now a person scared to make decisions."Maybe time would not feel as heavy if I didn't have this guilt-the guilt of knowing the truth and stuffing it down where no one can see it,not even Tobias," (Roth 130) She can't face the truth and holds it in as guilt, a trait that is never helpful. Honestly if i was in this position i would do my best to give the truth. Unless that truth would put me in complete danger , it would be the best to tell it as it would keep from further consequences of holding it in.
In the society, men are not allowed to take notice of women, this includes talking to them. one day while cleaning the streets, Equality 7-2521 met a women named, Liberty 5-3000. They even give her a name, “the golden one”, ( Rand 41). When Equality 7-2521 talked to Liberty 5-3000, i was not surprised because they would make signals to each other every day to say hi. Also, The main character has already broken many rules like not noticing women, and not letting the council know about the discovery of the tunnel. I think he breaks these rules because he wants to be happy in society and is tired of being told what to do. The main character in the beginning of the book is a quiet man part of the Equality 7-2521, who are street sweepers and break the rules without the government knowing. He breaks these rules for his own benefit, since he isn’t happy with them and because he’s not getting anything from the constant restrictions. on his way back from meeting the women, he begins to sing for no reason which is not allowed, but he has his own reasons.“We are singing because we are happy,” (Rand 45) Exclaimed Equality 2-2521. If I were Equality 7-2521, I would have talked to the girl earlier because he has already broken other rules so why not add on a few more?

1) Beatrice, now known as Tris, along with the other Dauntless initiates are now in the Dauntless hideout and the initiates that are not born into Dauntless get a tour of the place and are separated from the Dauntless born initiates. They then begin physical training in the first stage of initiation in which they are told only ten will pass initiation while the rest will become factionless and Tris is worried that she will become factionless because she is much weaker than the others.
2) Tris is quite conflicted in her mind because throughout the training in Dauntless, she still has a bit of Abnegation in her and wants to help others who are in need but know that it would not be right to act out. She didn’t act out which surprised me because I thought she wouldn’t be able to contain herself.
3) Beatrice at the beginning of the story was a good girl who mostly did what she was told in the Abnegation faction. When she chose Dauntless at the Choosing Ceremony, she became a different person. She wasn’t Beatrice anymore but now Tris and she learned to become a bit more like Dauntless instead of Abnegation. In her training she works hard. She works hard because she is motivated since she is weak and always getting teased since she is a “Stiff.” “’Whatever Four’s strategy is, it’s based on the idea that I am weaker than the other initiates. And it gives me a bitter taste in my mouth. I have to prove him wrong--I have to,’” (Roth 134).
4) If I were Tris in her situation with Peter, I would have gotten enraged at him and probably try to beat him up because I don’t think anyone should be treated like how Peter treated Tris. Also, I don’t think it’s right that people are judging Tris based on her old faction instead of the new faction she chose.

The Hunger Games
In this section, Katniss and Peeta arrive at the Capitol. Here they are all dressed up for the opening ceremonies in stunning outfits created by Cinna. Then, they start to train for the games and try to gain sponsors.
On the final day of training, each competitor is scored by the Gamemaker. This is used to show sponsors who will survive the longest and who has the most skill. Katniss decides to save her best skill to impress the judges, shooting an arrow. WHile she is being judged(she goes last), the gamekeeper and the judges are not paying attention to her. Katniss gets frustrated and shoots a bow right into their room and hits a pig on a table. She then walks out. I was surprised when she did this because I would think Katniss wants a good score and wants to gain sponsors. Instead, she tries to injure the people who grade her. This was confusing to me.
My first impression of Katniss is that she likes to keep to herself and not open up to others. Unless she is with someone she cares about like Gale or Prim. “Gale…I would never be telling Gale those things about me. He already knows them,” (Collins 122). I still think that Katniss is motivated by the love of her family. She wants to return to them safely and provide for them.
If i was in Katniss’ shoe’s i don’t think i would have shot the arrow into the room, I think this because it would get me a bad score for training which for lessen my chance fore sponsors.

1) In the story “2012”, Wiley and Martin are pushing people inside a church to avoid the orange plasma that is racing across the sky. They call their families to make sure they get to the church safely.
2) The main character, Wiley, is not your typical religious person. So, when Wiley started praying inside the Church that his family can get there safely, I was quite amazed and proud to say the least.
3) My first impression of Wiley at the beginning of the book was that he was a father that writes books about aliens invading the Earth with no logical reason behind it. Wiley would write these weird books and in the process, it would drive him mentally insane, literally. “The story’s got me. It’s drowning me.” (Strieber 75). Before Wiley started writing these books, Brooke (his wife) warned him the side effects writing alien books would do to him.
4) I have a connection to Mal Holmes because he says that the people inside the Church shouldn’t wait around standing, but that they should go out and fight. I agree with Mal because you would want to try and defend yourself and your families rather than surrendering to whatever is outside of the church.

2. I was not surprised when at first he was not worried about the aliens because I know he is a clam and laid back type of person
3. My character seems to be a normal man with no special qualities. During all of this commotion he heads home as if everything is okay and eats a normal dinner. ”My wife began cooking my dinner,”(Bradbury 150) I still believe he is motivated by curiosity because even when he was home and thought he was safe he was still thinking about how the Martians could not move due to the gravity shift from mars. “A Martian, therefor would weigh 3 times as much as they do on mars” As you can see my character is along for the ride just wondering about the possibilities.
4. If I were my character I would run to the safest place I could find and prepare for the worst possible things. But instead my character decides it would be a good idea to enjoy a dinner at his house

In the section that i read, Thalia goes to a meeting with her friend Yaz but her belly starts to growl again. Her friend covers for the strange noises. Later, Thalia and her mom get into a fight about what is going on with her belly and her mom wants to send her to a rehab place where they can fix her up. Thalia goes to a meeting with the strange boy named Basil where the leader eats food and then the police come but Thalia and Basil slip out undetected. When Thalia gets home she tells her mom and grandma what happened and her mother yells at Basil who runs out of the house and her mom takes Thalia to the rehab clinic.
I am surprised that Thalia told her mom where she was because she knows that her mom is against things like that. Also that she brought Basil back to her house and told them who he actually was because she must have known that it would cause problems with her mom. I still love this character because she is standing up for what she believes in.
My first impression of the character is that she is very curious. In the beginning of the book she wants to know what is really behind everything and what the world was like before there was no food and before all of the wars, she always ask her grandma questions about the past. I think what motivated Thalia is all of the facts that her grandma tells her and the hunger that she feels but should not be feeling. In the book it says “ That was the real family time, you know, Not for everyone, i guess. But in our family, since we were farmers, we wanted to sit down together and enjoy the food we’d raised,” (Swain 12). Thalia’s grandma is explaining to her certain types of food.
If i were in Thalia’s shoes, i would not have told her mom about where she was and i would not have brought Basil home because she knows that her mom is against the whole food thing and is with One World and also that she might not like Basil because he was the one that took Thalia to the meeting about food. I would not have lied to her but i wouldn't have told her mom the whole truth like she did.

2.) I do like Tris because of how much effort sheis beginning to put into her training, although it hasn’t started to pay off yet.
3.) In the beginning of the book Beatrice was very lost, she was not herself. Although she wanted to be dauntless she knew she was different, she still had a place for her old faction in her heart. "Maybe there is some abnegatin in everyone, even if they don’t know it. Well, in everyone but Peter," (Roth, 120). By the end Tris begins to become more herself, realizing she is different. She realizes there is abnegation in her, and that’s because shes strong, shes divergent.
4.) If I was Tris, I would try to hide the fact that I don't at heart belong to one faction. I would do this because if it gets out, Tris could be in serious danger.

Right now in the story Katniss and Peeta are going to District 1 to train and live rich for a few days before they enter the hunger games. They get announced to a huge event and they were something to represent there district. They were a dress that lights and goes on fire to represent coal for their district.
Katniss is tough. I say this because when Haymitch and Peeta where fighting she stabbed her knife in between them and broke it up. This shows what kind of character she is. She also hunted food for her family and took care of her sister back in district 12.his shows how tough she is.
My Character Katniss is very tough and UN selfish. I say Katniss is tough because back in district 12 she would hunt and break rules to get food for her family. Also she sacrificed herself to be in the Hungar Games instead of her sister showing how tough she is to take on that challenge. She is UN selfish because she cares about her team. When Haymitch and Peeta where arguing she was the one to break it up because she not only cares about her life but she cares about Peetas too and hoping her can make it as far as her into the hunger games. Also she is UN selfish because she replaced herself with her sister in the Hunger games. This shows how brave she is too put herself before her sister it was a huge act of her putting someone before herself which makes her UN selfish.
If I was in Katniss shoes I would probably break up the fight between Peeta and Haymitch too I would do this because I would care about my partner’s survival and life too.

1.) Tom Raines has been living in the Spire for a while now. He has been placed in Elliot Ramirez’s group for virtual reality training. Tom finds this extremely displeasing because he considers Elliot a “suck-up” and stickler for rules.
2.) Tom Raines made a bold move during an “applied simulations”, a virtual reality simulation, by letting down the drawbridge to their castle and letting the enemy army come in and then killing the enemy’s king. This move was extremely risky and frowned upon by his superiors, but I respect Tom for taking this risk.
3.) My first impression of Tom Raines, was that he was a risk taker and enjoyed defying authority. In the beginning of the book, Tom joined the Intrasolar Forces against his father’s will. While at the tower, Tom had one of his friends, Wyatt, access his records and add false accomplishments to his records, and Tom openly defied his superior, Eliot Ramirez, during applied sims by letting down the drawbridge for the enemy army. Tom does give an effort to try to follow directions, but mainly disobeys because the person has somehow wronged him in his mind. “He’d offer Eliot the head as fealty, but Elliot didn’t take it. He just gave Tom a stern, you’ve-disappointed-me-young-one look and ended the simulation.”(Kincaid, 30%). Tom was upset that Eliot didn’t allow him to fight, but he tried to compensate by offering Elliot the trophy, showing that he felt a slight bit guilty.
4.) If I was in Tom’s shoes, I would most likely try to obey the orders given by my superiors. I would do this because, unlike Tom, I would fear being on a superior’s bad side and potentially be punished for my behavior.

1. Winston changes the past (for his job) by altering former records and removing parts of old documents, he even makes new people and removes people from the past. Winston wants to have a relationship with somebody.
2. He realized that the Party wants it so that people are just having sex to create future Party members. I think that Winston is starting to sound a little weird; his biggest desire is to have Sex and yell about his problems.
3. At the beginning of the book Winston is a very simple man with little motivation. His biggest anger against Big Brother is that the Party’s, “real, undeclared purpose was to remove all pleasure from the sexual act.” He is motivated to somehow rebel against the Party so he writes bad things about them in his journal. He also longs to have an enjoyable sexual affair which shows he takes pleasure in very worldly things.
4. If I were Winston I would be a little more focused on finding somebody who is also rebelling against the Party instead of focusing on the simple pleasures of life.

ReplyDeleteMetaphor connecting how a house is covered. "Bushes has mostly consumed it,"(pg 107).This sets the tone of the building to show how old it is. Consumed shows how covered the building is. This also makes it more creepy how the building is supposed to be old and unknown to the kids.
